Lenten Poems

by E. G. Happ
1998 - 2010, 2022

These collections of poems mark the annual silent retreat in West Cornwall, CT, sponsored by St. Francis' Church in Stamford. A silent retreat is probably as close as an Episcopalian gets to a monastic vow of silence. I having been attending these for ten years during Lent. At first it was strange. As a friend once said, "why would you go away with a group of friends for a long weekend and not be able to talk?" Yet, that is what we do. I find that the silence, meditations and picturesque setting make for a creative oasis in an otherwise busy life. It invites a turn inward for an uninterrupted period of time unmatched by anything else I've done. The connection I need in order to write requires the pause of silencing the analyst and listening to the creative. So each year, I have written a flurry of poems in response to things I've seen, heard and felt during the weekend of silence.

I hope you enjoy the poems. If you have thoughts or questions, please send me a note at mailto:ehapp@hpmd.com . If one or more speaks to you, then I am doubly blessed. While on our web site, please take a look at the latest issue of The Fairfield Review at http://www.fairfieldreview.org and consider supporting our work with your gifts.
