The Invitation

It comes
by email
yet in my
father’s hand,
asking me to
walk my mother
to the altar
at their 50th

It is the
second time I’ve
heard from him
in four years--
the first
when he asked
my forgiveness
for how he
treated me
since my divorce--
a silent

I struggle
about going,
still angry,
wanting to keep
the hurt
at a distance--
comes hard.

To my confessor
I say
I fear
that he’ll want
to hug me--
an awkward
he and I
like ball
on a field
after losing
a game.
